CASSETTE TAPE
Where The Day Take 2 / Daedelus & Goodnight Cody
Side A mix by Daedelus
Side B mix by Goodnight Cody
Artwork by Edgar Medalla
Jungle's having a resurgence. Seemingly been doing so ever since gaining even modest popularity outside of pirate radio waves. True story,
I got a direct transmission at London's YWCA staying for a night in '93.
I don't recall what taped over, but during that brief stay I recorded an hour's worth of mixing from a mysterious station probably being beamed from a nearby tower tenement.
It was breakbeat chaos, blown out emcee interruptions, and aural bliss. I played that tape until the spindles fell out. Fast forward to '98 and I'm making my 1st official mixtape "Where The Day Takes You". Enlisted LA legend Jabari Mayes for an A-side full of white-label Tech Step and storming Rollers. My B-side then left free to wander weirder, with smatterings of Breakcore and Drill&Bass. Pressed 300 and for the most part they never see the light of day until years later. Roni Size wins the Mercury Award in '97, The Matrix OST from '99 featured Dj Hive, and so much more overground speculation on dance music's next big bass. However for many casual ravers Y2K ushers out the 90s. Drum&Bass runs back underground, splintering into a thousand subgenres. The sound never left, but what's brought it back into the light aren't those that never ceased, but rather a new generation ready for tempo. They are coming from other ear's like Juke, Hyperpop, and Beat Scene. The energy is (as ever) infectious. Now I'm the A-side, still with genre defying mixing. With B-side duties deftly handled by Goodnight Cody, and their entirely original tunes. "Where The Day Takes 2" is trying for the same aural bliss, while almost daring you to tape over it if tuned into better. - Daedelus
